BFRBUILT FOR RANK

Local SEO Services for Service Businesses

Local SEO services for businesses that serve a city or region: Google Business Profile, reviews, location pages, local schema, citations, and honest reporting.

Local Search Is a Separate Competition

When someone searches "plumber near me," Google runs two competitions on one results page. Below sit the organic blue links you already know. Above them sits the map pack — three business listings and a map — and it is ranked by different rules.

Google is unusually direct about those rules. Its documentation states that local results are ranked on relevance, distance, and prominence: relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for," distance is "how far each business is from the customer who's searching," and prominence is "how well-known a business is."

Two of those three you can influence. Distance you cannot — and that is the first thing most local SEO pitches leave out. If your shop sits eleven miles outside the city center, no amount of optimization puts you in the pack for a search made downtown. What optimization does is win you everything within realistic range, which for most service businesses is the majority of their actual customers.

What Actually Moves Local Rankings

Your Google Business Profile

This is the highest-leverage asset in local search, and the one most businesses treat as a set-and-forget listing. Primary category selection alone can decide whether you appear for a query at all. Services, service areas, hours, attributes, products, photos and Q&A all feed relevance.

We audit and complete the profile, then keep it current — Google treats an actively maintained profile differently from an abandoned one. If you would rather run this yourself, our 12-step Google Business Profile checklist is the same process we follow, published in full.

Reviews, earned the legitimate way

Reviews feed prominence, and they are also the thing a customer reads before calling. We set up the request flow — the timing, the link, the follow-up — so asking becomes routine rather than awkward, and we handle responses, including the negative ones.

What we do not do is buy, incentivize or gate reviews. Beyond being against Google's policies, review manipulation is the most detectable form of local spam there is, and profiles get suspended over it.

NAP consistency

Name, address and phone number have to match across the web. Inconsistencies — an old suite number, a tracking phone number that leaked onto three directories, a former business name — dilute the signals Google uses to confirm you are one real business at one real address.

We fix the listings that carry weight and skip the ones that do not. Blasting your details across 300 low-quality directories is a product, not a strategy.

Location pages that are not doorway pages

If you serve eight towns, eight pages can make sense — but only if each one says something specific and true. Google's spam policies explicitly name doorway pages: near-identical pages generated for each city with the name swapped, existing to catch search traffic rather than serve a reader.

We build location pages when there is genuine substance behind them — real service differences, real projects, real coverage details — and we tell you when there is not. Six honest pages outperform forty templated ones, and they do not put your domain at risk.

LocalBusiness schema

Structured data tells search engines your address, hours, service area and business type in a machine-readable form. It is also increasingly what AI search systems parse when they answer "who does X near me." Every page we build ships with correct JSON-LD; on local engagements that includes LocalBusiness markup tied to your verified profile data.

The website underneath

The map pack sits above the organic results, but the two are connected — your website is a prominence signal for the profile, and the organic listing under the pack is a second chance to be found. A slow, thin or unstructured site holds back both. Core Web Vitals thresholds (LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1) are the measurable part of that, and we monitor them continuously rather than at audit time.

How We Run It

Month one is foundation work. Profile audit and correction, review flow setup, NAP cleanup, schema implementation, and a technical pass on the site. This is where most of the first quarter's movement comes from, and it is front-loaded deliberately.

After that it is publishing and adjustment. Local rankings respond to sustained activity: new content answering the questions your customers actually search, profile posts, fresh photos, review velocity, and fixes as Google's local algorithm shifts. Our website automation handles the recurring publishing side so it does not depend on anyone remembering to do it.

Reporting shows local metrics, not vanity numbers. Map pack positions for your target searches, calls and direction requests from the profile, organic local rankings, and what changed month over month. If something is not working, the report says so.

What We Will Not Do

Stated plainly, because this industry has a reputation problem:

  • No ranking guarantees. Distance is a stated ranking factor and it is fixed. Anyone guaranteeing map pack placement is either ignoring that or lying about it.
  • No fake or incentivized reviews. Not one.
  • No doorway pages for cities you do not meaningfully serve.
  • No mass directory submissions sold as "citation building."
  • No long contracts. Cancel any time — the work should keep you, not the paperwork.

What It Costs

Local SEO runs on our published plans. If you need the website itself, that is a $1,500 one-time build fee, and every build ships with the technical and schema foundation local search depends on.

Ongoing local SEO work lives in Grow at $249/mo or Scale at $499/mo — the plans that include recurring content, keyword tracking and monthly reporting. Our Host ($20/mo) and Maintain ($99/mo) plans keep a site online, secure and editable, but they do not include ongoing SEO management, and we would rather say that here than after you have signed up.

Full pricing is published, including exactly what each plan does and does not cover. For how local fits into a broader program, see our SEO services.

Is This You?

Local SEO is worth paying for when you serve a defined geographic area, your customers search before they call, and a phone call is worth real money to you — the trades, clinics, law firms, restaurants and salons we build for across a range of industries. It is worth doing yourself when you have more time than budget, in which case our local SEO guide gives you the same eight priorities in order.

It is worth much less if you sell nationally with no physical service area, or if your leads come entirely from referral. We will tell you that on the call rather than sell you a plan.

One more thing worth planning for: local SEO works by producing phone calls, and calls nobody follows up on are wasted spend. If tracking leads is currently a shared inbox and a notepad, that is a solvable problem — see custom CRM development and our wider custom business software work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google Business Profile setup and ongoing optimization, review generation and response, NAP consistency across the directories that matter, location pages for each area you genuinely serve, LocalBusiness schema markup, and the technical health of the website underneath all of it. Plus monthly reporting that shows map pack positions and calls, not just a traffic number.

At Built For Rank, local SEO runs on the same published plans as everything else: a $1,500 one-time build fee if you need the site itself, then $249/mo (Grow) or $499/mo (Scale) for the ongoing content, tracking and reporting that local rankings depend on. Our $20 Host and $99 Maintain plans keep a site online and current but do not include ongoing SEO work. Full pricing is published — nothing is quoted behind a sales call.

Google Business Profile changes can move within days to a few weeks, which makes local the fastest-moving corner of SEO. Organic local rankings — the blue links under the map — behave like normal SEO and typically take 3 to 6 months. Anyone promising map pack positions in a fixed number of days is selling something we do not.

No, and neither can anyone else. One of Google's three stated local ranking factors is distance from the searcher, which no agency can change. We can make you the most relevant and most prominent option in your area — the two factors that are actually in play — and we will tell you upfront when your address makes a given search unwinnable.

Usually yes, and single-location businesses often see the clearest return. One well-optimized profile competing in one city is a far simpler problem than a multi-location rollout, and the map pack sits above the organic results for nearly every service query with local intent.
